Last night I caught up with an old friend at Spa Nordik in Chelsea, Québec. The falling January snow, mixed with steaming eucalyptus aromas made for the perfect peaceful escape during these dark winter months. Even though I'm well aware my funds are currently very tight, I still knew I had to experience this mini retreat for my mental health's sake.
We were greeted with luminous blue trees amidst a bed of white as we climbed the steps to a glowing cabin in the woods. A few guests are warming themselves by a communal fire, and we get hit with smells of cedar and sage. Already our minds start to release what challenges the past month has brought.
Water to keep us hydrated, robes to keep us warm and bathing-suits that sported our unapologetic cellulite; we were ready for this hydrotherapy. Of course this being our first time, we alternated from one pool to one sauna without a plan. But as the spa advertises, the "Thermal Cycle" ( Hot > Cold > Rest), is the best way to reduce toxins and induce full relaxation.
For a Wednesday evening it still felt fairly active, but also intimate as we definitely felt the P.D.A from various middle-aged couples. Not paying attention to the divided areas of silence and whisper, we mistook an employee's finger-to-mouth gesture of silence for a confusing game of charades. It only took us a few minutes, but once understood we relocated to another area to continue our conversation on the social pressures of marriage.
The"Yoürte", a Mongolian styled yurt, was the highlight of the night. Especially as the snow fell for our premier experience. All in all if you are in need of affordable therapy, Nordik is your answer. On the southern edge of Québec and minutes from Ottawa, make sure to add it to your bucket list.
